The European Commission has disbursed an additional €10 million to the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees in the Near East (UNRWA), reinforcing its support amid growing humanitarian needs. This supplementary funding follows the €82 million already allocated to the agency earlier in 2024. In a statement, the European Commission emphasized its continued commitment to providing both financial and political backing to UNRWA, enabling the agency to deliver essential services to Palestinian refugees.

The Commission underscored the importance of sustaining these efforts, particularly in light of escalating challenges in the region. UNRWA, established in 1949, plays a central role in delivering education, healthcare, and emergency aid to Palestinian refugees across the Middle East. The agency has faced increasing demand for its services due to ongoing conflicts and economic instability in the region, which have exacerbated humanitarian needs.

The latest funding injection is part of a broader European Union strategy to bolster international aid mechanisms and maintain stability in conflict-affected areas. The EU remains one of the largest donors to UNRWA, reflecting its long-standing support for humanitarian efforts in the region. This development comes as UNRWA continues to address urgent requirements, including food assistance, shelter, and medical care for displaced populations. The agency has repeatedly warned about funding shortfalls that could jeopardize its operations, highlighting the importance of sustained donor contributions.

Officials from the European Commission reiterated their call for international partners to step up contributions, ensuring that UNRWA can fulfill its mandate without disruption. They stressed that collective action is essential to prevent further deterioration of living conditions among Palestinian refugees. The additional €10 million marks another step in the EU’s broader commitment to supporting stability and humanitarian relief in the Middle East, reinforcing efforts to meet the growing demands faced by vulnerable communities. – By MENA Newswire News Desk.
